Sitia is located at the easternmost tip of the island of Crete, in the Lasithi region, nestled in a gently curving bay of the Aegean Sea. Sitia Beach

Sitia boasts a long, clean sandy beach that stretches right along the town’s bay. The main beach is perfect for families, thanks to its shallow entry, organized facilities, and proximity to cafés and taverns.

With around 9,000 permanent residents, Sitia is one of the smaller cities on Crete. The population has remained stable. Many people live in surrounding villages and come to Sitia for shopping, work, and education.

There are also small fish markets near the harbor and seasonal festivals celebrating local products – like the August wine festival.


History

Sitia has roots in Minoan times and was once part of the ancient city-state Itanos. Under Venetian rule, it became a regional center. After a major earthquake in the 15th century, the city was rebuilt during the Ottoman era.

Today, Sitia retains its proud cultural identity, offering a genuine Cretan experience away from mainstream tourist areas.
