ποΈ The Dreamy Lagoon Paradise in Northwestern Crete
Balos Beach is one of the most spectacular natural landscapes on the island of Crete. With its white coral and shell sand, turquoise waters, and sheltered lagoon, Balos is a true natural gem β reminiscent of tropical island beaches. In our opinion, Balos Beach is definitely one of the 10 most beautiful beaches on the island of Crete and should definitely be visited when holidaying in the western part of the island.
π Location
Balos is located at the northwestern tip of the Gramvousa Peninsula, about 56β―km from Chania and 17β―km from the town of Kissamos. The lagoon is separated from the open sea by Cape Tigani and a narrow strip of land β a stunning photo opportunity!

π Getting There
By Car:
From the village of Kaliviani, a rough 8β―km dirt road leads to a parking area situated about 100 meters above sea level. From there, itβs a 30-minute hike down a rocky path to the beach. Sturdy footwear, sun protection, and plenty of water are essential β especially during midday heat.
By Boat:
From April to October, daily excursion boats depart from Kissamos port. These tours usually include a stop at the nearby island of Imeri Gramvousa, where you can visit a Venetian fortress and enjoy a swim.
π Popularity
Balos Beach is one of the most photographed spots in Crete and draws large crowds, especially during the summer months. July and August see the highest number of visitors. For a more peaceful experience, come early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
